When these were used you would put the laundry on the top of the lid and as more laundry is added the large coil inside retracts. As laundry is removed the coil pushes the lid back up to the top so you don't need to reach all the way inside!
These are a GREAT accent piece for any laundry room and can still be used! They would also make a great umbrella stand or a unique storage container!
